West Bengal Floods
In July 2015, West Bengal was hit by Cyclone Komen. Due to this very rainfall (70% in excess, 170 mm) occurred across the state which affected 12 districts in south Bengal and 36, 00,000 people overall. 83 people lost their lives. 126,594 shelters were fully damaged whereas 424,140 shelters were partially damaged. Crops, (largely paddy and vegetables), were damaged over an area of 797,848 hectares.
Islamic Relief India was able to reach out to 1,523 household with the provision of life-saving winterisation support. Under the project, the targeted household were provided with vital winterisation support to most marginalised families. 2 blankets were provided to families having less than 4 members and 3 blankets were given to families having more than 5 members. The project covered 707 widows, 131 Person with disability, 164 persons suffering from chronic illness, 13 orphans and 521 poorest of the poor families.
