Rehabilitation after floods
The Eastern districts of Sri Lanka are highly susceptible to natural disasters and following flooding, approximately 67,000 tube wells became contaminated with salt water and 11,000 were damaged. This had a sever impact upon the availability of clean drinking water in the affected regions.
As part of the emergency response, Islamic Relief worked towards resolving this issue through chlorinating and dewatering polluted wells and repairing damaged wells. Through this action, the water would once again be suitable for drinking.
In total, over 6,500 wells were rehabilitated and were once again used by the families that relied so heavily upon them. This action benefited over 30,000 people.
