Fresh water for families in Ampara
Although the civil war ended in 2009, the impact of decades of conflict is still apparent in the Eastern provinces. In Ampara district, for example, access to clean drinking water is severely restricted due to contaminated drinking water sources, which is a source of infectious diseases. Although there has been great improvement across the country, much of the investment has focused upon urban areas, leaving rural areas without adequate sources of water.
Islamic Relief focused upon nine areas within the Ampara district to construct tube wells, providing clean drinking water to many families. Following installation of the wells, the families nt only have clean drinking water, they can utilise the time saved from walking long distances to collect water to focus upon income generation activities.
